General
Directions for Taking Medication:
Take only as directed. DO NOT increase your dose
without consulting with your doctor. DO NOT stop
taking this medicine abruptly without talking to
your doctor first. This may worsen your symptoms.
Your doctor may need to reduce the dose gradually.
If you miss a dose, take the medicine as soon as you
remember. If it is time for your next dose, take
only 1 dose. DO NOT double up the doses. Take with
food or a glass of milk to limit upset stomach
symptoms. Stop smoking. Ask your doctor for help.
Smoking decreases the effectiveness of this
medication.
If you are taking this medication to treat insomnia,
take dose 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. Talk to
your doctor about the need to wear a medical alert
pendant or bracelet. There are many products that
provide information to health care providers about
your medicines and specific condition in case of an
emergency.
See your doctor regularly to monitor the
effectiveness of this medicine with lab tests,
anxiety screenings, and a physical exam.
Contraindications:
Allergies - Hypersensitivity to this medication or
its components Comatose patients
Patients with central nervous system depression,
severe pain, narrow angle glaucoma, and alcohol
intolerance
Use with caution in:
Pregnancy and Breast Feeding - May not be safe for
your baby. Talk to your doctor about risk and
benefits. Patients with liver or kidney disorders
Suicidal patients Patients prone to addiction
Geriatric patients Children
Common Side Effects:
May occur during the first few days after beginning
therapy, but usually resolve:
Drowsiness, dizziness, upset stomach, loss of
balance, tremors, weakness, memory loss, grogginess,
hangover feelings, or nightmares
Serious Side Effects:
Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any
of the following:
Blurred vision, headaches, confusion, depression,
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation,
respiratory depression, or mood changes Abrupt
withdrawal of this medication may cause insomnia,
irritability, agitation, nervousness, and seizures.
Allergic reaction symptoms such as a red skin rash;
itching; swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and
throat; wheezing; chest pain; and difficulty
breathing
Interactions:
Drug - There are many medications, both
over-the-counter and prescription, which will alter
the action of this medication. Some include
antidepressants, antihistamines, narcotics,
anti-ulcer drugs, birth control pills, anti-fungal
agents, blood pressure medications, heart
medications, anti-Parkinsonian medications,
anti-tuberculosis drugs, barbiturates, anti-asthma
drugs, and other anti-seizure medicines.
It is extremely important that you consult with your
doctor about dosing schedules if you take a variety
of medications along with this medication. DO NOT
take any new medication without talking with your
doctor first.
Warnings:
Overdose - Can lead to drowsiness, confusion,
diminished reflexes, respiratory depression, coma,
and even death.
Avoid driving or operating machinery due to
drowsiness and dizziness side effects. Avoid
alcoholic beverages. May increase sedation and
unsteadiness. Keep this medication and all others
out of reach of children and pets.
